In April 2012, Amanda Halliday travelled to the Arctic to raise money for the Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity – Skcin, the UK’s only national skin cancer specific charity.
Early last year, Amanda’s Mum, Shirley, received the news she had Bowen’s Disease and Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The former is a pre-cancerous condition and the latter a full-blown form of skin cancer. Thankfully the prognosis with treatment is good as long as Shirley takes the correct preventive measures and is vigilant in her watch for changes.
The Arctic Dog Sled Challenge came about as a direct response to this diagnosis.
This website documents the entire journey, from planning, training, fund-raising and promoting to the trip itself – a seven-day, 250km trek via dogsled through Lapland. It will also feature updates on Shirley’s progress and recovery.

“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us” – John Steinbeck
